Obsessed with Loofas

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

Just be sure to follow these steps to keep bacteria free loofas.

Ever since I was a child, the loofa has been one of my favorite all natural exfoliates. I was raised in a home that used loofas to bathe everyday. My parents were from Honduras, Central America, and they grew up bathing with them - naturally this tradition of skincare would be passed down to us. Every time they visited, they would bring some back home and we always had enough to spare year round. Needless to say, we have super soft and silky skin as a result. Unfortunately, I don't travel to Honduras these days, but luckily for me loofas are much easier to access today as you can find them in almost any beauty or health store.

Luffa or loofa is a plant from the cucumber family that grows in tropical and subtropical climates. The loofa is made from the gourd of the cucumber. They are perfect for naturally exfoliating the skin, keeping it healthy, silky and smooth, and also stimulates circulation. To use a loofa you should always rinse under warm or hot water first to soften it. It's best to use liquid body wash and gently scrub your skin using small circular motions. This is much gentler on the skin instead of scrubbing up and down, which can cause scratches on the skin. Never cleanse over cuts or open wounds, and always loofa before shaving, not after.

While the benefits of using a loofa is great, it often gets a bad rap by how it can build bacteria which can cause infection if not cleaned properly after every use. To keep them from building bacteria make sure to cleanse under warm or hot water to remove all the soap. Take them out of the shower and allow them to completely dry. Often under the sunlight is best. Once a week you can add the loofa to boiling water and stir it for a few minutes then letting it completely dry before the next use. This will kill any underlining bacteria. Loofas should replaced at least every 3-4 weeks.
